FATHER FIGURES
With Fathers Day, being June 15, 2008 I wanted to take a few minutes
to reflect on what that means to me. I met my father for the second time, after twenty-two years, about this time last summer.
He resides in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. He has lived there for the last 50 years, since moving from Tampa Florida
at nineteen years old.
The neighborhood seemed a little more grimey than I remembered when visiting
with my mother as a child. I approached the building vestibule with feelings of anxiousness. Finally,
close to obtaining the pieces of our estranged relationship, being able to vaguely recall the old neighborhood gave me
an unexpected feeling of calm. The voice answering the intercom also seemed familiar, after a short elevator ride,
I was at the door. The man who answered the door was a fairer complected, older version of myself. The small
apartment was the same as it has been. Time was understandably limited however, I wanted to find out more about the dynamics
of the relationship between my mother, his wife and their children.
Although there are many questions left
unasked and unanswered overall, the road-trip proved to be a success. I got to establish a link with my dad, that didn't
exist prior to that day hopefully, we can build on that. Also, while in Brooklyn the "RLS" team had a
chance to crash the Brooklyn Academy of Music (B.A.M.,) street festival. Approximately 3 hours,
a handful of flyers and a half dozen t-shirts later we were on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE,) headed for I-95 south.
All in all, a good day. Until next time, living the lifestyle...
